Coeval’s self-titled debut offering is 9 tracks of dark and propulsive instrumentation which burn, crawl, wheeze, and contort; a sonic running of the gamut which synthesises the live, and lived, experience of the group’s past four years. The tracks are sometimes martial (like the album’s 7 minute brutal, smouldering centrepiece Liminal), sometimes tender (Poreless Life), but always compelling.

Traditionally clockwork drum machines paradoxically emit queasily loping and staggering jabs of percussion. The pained and vulnerable vocals reminiscent of the frustration of an outsider wanting it all yet having nothing. The guitars squall. The bass resonates ponderously, adding a skeleton to this mass of dejected lumpen flesh.

All tracks were recorded live, together as a single unit, as would be played on-stage, and the record is imbued with this communal energy, each member symbiotically feeding off the other; the musical camaraderie is palpable.

A range of influences are synthesised here from drone, to noise, to classic punk, yet the work is not merely valuable for its initial sense of familiarity, rather for its uncanniness. It is valuable for the unsettling feeling that this all harks back to nothing yet still elicits something. It is valuable for the sense of meaning in profound and sincere emptiness.

All of Liiek’s album covers are incredibly compelling, and their take on post-punk is just as appealing. As much as I liked their first album, this follow up is much more cohesive, delivering a perfect amalgamation of melody and dissonance. Glad I was able to find a copy on vinyl. kel kontraire
